Port Cities within Port Regions: Shaping Complex Urban Environments in Gdańsk Bay, Poland

Port cities located within various metropolitan or functional regions face very different development scenarios. This applies not only to entire municipalities but also particular areas that play important roles in urban development—including ports as well their specialized parts. refers the types of maritime industries, including processing goods, logistics operations, shipbuilding, ship repairing, name just a few. Since each these activities is associated with location, any transformation process creates changes geographic borders flows will dynamically affect port cityscape. Municipalities may evolve directions, becoming ‘major hubs,’ ‘secondary service centers,’ ‘specialized waterfront cities,’ distressed areas. Within area, one can find several evolving above-mentioned which results creation specific regional mosaic cities. These create ‘port regions’ assigned and shape new (regional) dimension geography flows. As result, are created porous structures where space discontinuous. To further develop issue evolution regions, authors present case study Gdańsk Bay region. allowed for both theoretical background this phenomenon presentation real-life example.
